However, Saks refurbished that spot for a larger store, which had a two-year construction period until 1999 including a new second floor entrance to the new parking deck. Jordan Marsh was husbanded in 1991 because of Allied Stores and was converted to Mervyns in 1992, which in turn closed in 1995 and was to become Dillard's in 1997 as they took over ten Florida stores from the California retailer. While the Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, and Sears locations remained the same throughout most of the mall's history, the other three anchor pads changed as a result of mergers, acquisitions, and relocations. Another anchor, Lord & Taylor, opened at center court in 1987 where Neiman Marcus was to open, followed by an expansion featuring Bloomingdale's and Saks Fifth Avenue a year later in 1988, making the mall's department store mix unparalled in the country. The mall's opening led to Boca Raton growing west, and as a result, the city became a retail hub for southern Florida. ![]() At the time of opening, the mall had 100 stores and featured a New York City theme with a round black station clock, living vegetation below a series of atriums, and several distinctive wishing fountains. Sears also served as the mall's west end anchor, having opened within the mall on Augalongside Jordan Marsh as the second and third anchors. The one-story mall was built by Sears subsidiary Homart Development Company as construction started with the Florida-based department store Burdines as the first anchor in July 1979, a year before the rest of the mall. ![]() That led to Allison being told that he “was free to go.”īut - according to the filing - Ryan Allison “was then dragged back through the entire Apple Store, causing him to suffer even more embarrassment and emotional distress, before finally being freed. The Town Center Mall opened in 1980 on a site just west of Interstate 95 directly on Glades Road. Once the guards saw the electronic receipt - which Allison had offered to provide when the guards first accosted him - a supervisor was called and told of the situation. “Allison was forced into the back of the store to be interrogated (where he was asked) for his name, his drivers license, his telephone number, and to see proof of purchase for his AirPods, which he previously offered to provide.” But the Security Guards apparently didn’t care - digging deeper into their concocted story. That proved the guards had lied to Allison when they told him the salesman reported them stolen. The Apple salesperson that Ryan Allison had worked with told the security guards that they were wrong - that Allison paid for the AirPods. The late 2018 incident, according to the federal filing, then took a bizarre turn. ![]() “Allison was then dragged, in handcuffs, from the Mall back into the Apple Store by the Security Guards,” according to the suit. The suit continues: “The Security Guards refused to abide by (Allison’s) reasonable request and instead lied to him,” claiming the sales rep said the AirPods were stolen. (Allison) advised the Security Guards that they were mistaken, and they could look at his phone which contained proof of purchase of the AirPods.” Allison said he didn’t and had the electronic receipt to prove it - but the guards apparently didn’t care.įrom the suit: “(Ryan Allison) was violently thrown up against a wall in the (Boca Raton Town Center) Mall by the Security Guards, put in handcuffs, and told that he had stolen the AirPods he had just paid for. Wearing AirPods he already owned, Allison - according to the suit - asked a salesman for help buying another pair of AirPods. A federal lawsuit filed on Allison’s behalf by Palm Beach County Attorney Richard Lubliner alleges the Apple Security Guards - who are employed by SIS Security - profiled Allison from the moment he walked into the store to purchase the gift.
